Western Australia is a globally significant resources hub with a wealth of mineral resources and some of the most advanced mining industries in the world. We also have some of the most accessible renewable energy resources, which have the potential to revolutionise the way we power mining and manufacturing.
To make this a reality, we need to decarbonise our existing mining and minerals industries, and transition away from exporting raw materials to the development of new minerals processing that will provide a more significant economic benefit to Western Australia. We could become a world leader in zero-carbon metals production, exporting green steel and aluminium, renewable hydrogen and ammonia.
The production of LNG (liquid natural gas) is Western Australia’s largest source of carbon pollution. While the expansion of this highly polluting industry must be prevented, decarbonising the existing LNG facilities, and transitioning to renewable hydrogen, offers the incredible potential for job creation, most of which would benefit regional communities.
